Why I love Intermittent Fasting To Burn Unhealthy Body Fat

18 6 Intermittent Fasting: How I Fast To Burn Fat Fast

Fasting has been something I have utilized off and on over my 29 years of being a fitness fanatic.

I love the energy I get from it, but also the focus. Plus it is nicer to worry about my food only over a few hours, giving me more time to focus uninterrupted on projects I need to get done with work.

Lately, I have been fasting to burn visceral fat. That is a form of fat that is not good. Your body stores this type of fat around your organs which can lead to Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, increased inflammation, and increased risk for heart disease to name a few great things it does for you.

What is super cool though is that fasting and intermittent fasting both help burn visceral fat. And for men over 40 and women in menopause, we tend to put more visceral fat on than plain on ole ugly body fat we have in those places we hate it being there.

Over the last few years, I noticed that my waistline looked different than before 2017. Until my 2018 competition season, I fasted routinely 12-16 hours a day since I was in high school when I started bodybuilding.

I ate when I was ready, which fell in that window. After 2018, I decided to push my size and shrink my eating window to account for the extra meals I consumed, going from 5 to 6 a day.

I decided to dig into the research to see if maybe I wasn’t losing my mind about my stomach being different due to my change in eating windows. After reading (PMID: 35276989), I found out I was not too far off as intermittent fasting has been shown to help burn visceral fat because of the stressor fasting is.

The trick is you want your fast to spike adrenaline, which stimulates beta 3 receptors, which have a lot of receptors for visceral fat. But you can also adapt quickly to longer fasting windows where this spike does a good job instead of an excellent job. This means it doesn’t work well if you abuse fasting windows for too long. This is where most people screw up fasting and why it tends to cause more issues than solve them.

But I knew I could keep my windows steady and not go crazy with it, so I figured, why not try it? Here are my thoughts:

For the last two months, I have been using 2 18 hour fasts a week, with 3 being 12 hours and 2 being 14 hours.

I feel better than ever, my digestion is excellent, and my energy levels are high. My weightlifting belt is down to 2 notches, whereas I was at 4 notches 14 weeks out in 2022 when I was not using longer fasting windows.

I suggest rotating fasting in and out of your programming to combat this. Once you get to 20 hours of fasting, I would take a break for 2 weeks or so, dropping your fasting windows down to 12 hours to help keep digestion good and steady while allowing your body a break from the adrenaline spikes and routine of fasting.

Another thing of note is that I break my fasts with protein and fat for my first meal. A study (PMID: 30968140) showed this strategy helps to maintain better blood glucose levels over your day for better management of this biomarker.

I even decided to use fasting during my dieting phase leading up to a bodybuilding show. I feared my body chewing my hard built muscle up, but thank goodness for deploying a ketogenic diet and with fasting I was able to get my fat loss going again.

IF is always a hot-button topic in the health and fitness space.

Some love it, and others loathe it, but almost every “fit and health influencer” has their own view on it.

It has its uses and abuses, but like anything, those things are decided by your approach.

Earlier this year, I decided to see how I measured up at Master’s nationals. I had over 6 months till the show, and my off-season had been near perfect.

As I started my prep, things rolled along as they always do for me in prep, until for 3 weeks straight, I looked and weighed the same. If I kept going, it would be as wasted in effort as the millions my Cowboys wasted on Dak Prescott.

When your all-start fails you, it’s time for the old reliable backup that is far from as exciting but gets the job done.

I decided into Ketosis to get my body burning fat as fuel again while adding in some 16-18 hour fasting days to help my body clean some things up inside that were bullying my progress.

Over the next 4 weeks, I felt better, had more energy, and my digestion was restored along with sleep. Basically, everything that goes to shit in prep was no longer crappy.

When we moved me back over to carbs, I was back to responding as usual during my preps.

18 6 Intermittent Fasting: How Many Years Have I utilized It?

I have been competing since 2006 with over 25 shows, with crappy placings to my name to agree not every prep is precisely the same.

However, I recall 3 instances where I had to introduce diet variability by utilizing Keto to get my body moving again.

2023 was the first year I paired IF with Keto to address my digestion issues, but also some visceral fat gain that aging as a man gives you.

Would I do 18 6 intermittent fasting with Keto again? Yep. In fact, I might start my next prep with Keto.

Is IF like the 18 6 intermittent fasting with Keto for everyone? Nope.

With all that said, everyone can benefit from Keto and IF from time to time.

If you already do a great job starving yourself while abstaining from carbs, then you should eat and consider this way way way later.

I hope you found this article helpful and as interesting. I enjoy writing my journey to you all along with sharing client successes with it. Remember there is no one right way and 18 6 intermittent fasting might be right for you now, but not forever.
